pukey thankfulness

Today, we heal. Our pace slow, our range minimal. Ruby’s been in and out of sleep, Margot and I canning the last of the tomatoes and tomatillos, watching movies, drawing and listening to the panicked aspen leaves, like yellow fingers snapping with the wind’s rhythm.

I was awake, newborn-baby-style, last night. Ruby started vomiting just before bed, right around when a certain someone mentioned the ‘binders full of women.’ And it continued until well past sunrise.

Oh my girl was sick, waking every half-hour or so, her little body heaving against mine. I sat on the bathroom floor, holding her most of the night. In my painfully tired state, I changed clothes, drew baths, mopped floors, stripped sheets. I cradled her limp limbs, stroked her forehead, promised her it’d be over soon.

I find myself feeling thankful for today. For our health, for this opportunity to be here in my warm, cozy home with my kids. It feels like we all needed this homeward day.

Today, a few things I noticed and appreciated:

:: The handmade dreamcatcher I found at a thrift store that is our perfect solution to the bird collisions. We had attached kid art and stickers to the window which was fine but visually distracting to me. This works so well because I find the dreamcatcher frames beautiful snapshots of the outside world all day long. I love it.

Now we just have to keep the birds from flying into our home through open doors, which has happened twice this week (all are well). Goodness.

:: My mama, who is the queen of motherly caregiving. She always turned sick days into cozy, cuddly, loving events with ice chips, dry toast, grape juice slushies, couch beds, cool washcloths and tender attention. Trying to do you proud, mom.

This is our guest room, where Ruby decided to sleep much of the day.

:: Our new rug that arrived just in time for a limp, feverish kid to set up a comfortable camp right in front of the stove.

:: This exchange I had with my nearly-five-year old daughter:

Margot: Mom, I need to tell you six things.
Me: OK. I’m ready.
Margot: One. Can you teach me how to climb a tree? Two. I need new tights. Three. I love you. Four. You are special. Five. I love you again. Six. That salad you made for dinner? It was yummy.

You even make caring for a puking child sound like a moment to treasure. Nici I love your writing, and I totally admire the way you are a mama to your two girls. I love Margot's 6 things.

I will remember a lot of your blog posts when I become a Mum. For all the moments I am terrified of in the next few months, let alone when they actually arrive I will bring out a treasure trove of things to hope for.

Hoping Ruby is back to her normal bubbly self soon.

Poor sweet little puke face, although what mama doesn't love a limp noodle body! My mom was also queen of sick days and I know your mom is sooooo proud!

And love your dream-catcher-scarecrow-bird saver, the new rug, aspen leaves and cozy guest room naps.

    Home.

That comment made me want to puke too. Poor Ruby – it seems like the temp change always brings out the germs. I can hear those fingers snapping…

I ache for your home – for what you've made it. I love our home, it's eclectic and cozy too, but yours lacks all the crap. This particular blog was so sweet. The way you described the leaves falling? Amazing.

Oh a sick wee one is the worst…they do not understand & think it will last forever…you were so wise to tell her it will be over soon, that she did understand, hugs & kisses from Gram Rubes!

The photo of your window with the dream catcher…breathtaking! I would love to look out that window everyday!

My sweet Nici, you DO me so proud…#7…I love you too!

You all have such wonderful souls. I love the intricate way our girls think, how effective and simple their words can be.

"Binder full of women" was nauseating.

Yay! for the dreamcatcher working. I've rescued so many birds, and animals of all sorts. I read a post where you said animals find you, come to you to be rescued. I like how you said that. They are drawn and come to me, too, I reckon. It's not like I go out looking for frightened or injured animals. It just happens! Sweet, tender, and precious moments.

Anyway… Glad your babe is feeling better. No matter how tired we are, our SuperMommaness kicks in and we roll with it.

    Have a beautiful day, Nici!

Poor little Ruby! I hope she is better soon. I wish our sick days could be full of cuddles and slushies, but my kids are (luckily) never that sick and once they find out they get to stay home, are suddenly remarkably chipper (although the toddler does like a short cuddle nap when she is poorly and I love those).

ps I just wrote a short post on my blog about how I was vomited and pooped on within 24 hours, and how I never feel more like a mom than at those times when your kids really need you.

Nici, the fall view out your window. It's INCREDIBLE.

  17. FinnyKnits Avatar

Aw, my mom did that stuff when we were sick as kids, too. It was the secret to the fast healing process, I'm sure of it.

    Good job, mama.

    ALSO WOW FALL COLORS.

Oh poor little Ruby-Roo. Hope she's back to her bouncy little self soon.

A day at home. A day of quiet zen and rest is sometimes so-called-for in this busy world we live in.

Your photos are gorgeous Nici. They reap warmth and family love.

    Wishing you a spew-free weekend.

Wonderful post…and hey, where'd you get the beautiful rug? Can I fly you out to Ohio to have you decorate my new home? I'm clueless!

Ugh… sick kiddies is so hard… I always think that it's hard enough as an adult and we KNOW it's going to end, but in a kids mind, it must be like WTH??? Why is this never ending??
Aww Poor Ruby, hope she is better by now.

  21. Chante Avatar

Ruby is a smart girl. I would set up camp in that guest room too. Gorgeous view and bed and quilt. Hope your babe is feeling better today.

  22. Jamie Avatar

Poor sweet Ruby. I'm positive that your momma is very proud. As much as it pains me when my littles are sick, I try to savor those snuggles and quiet moments when they need me.

And Margot's 6 things made me laugh out loud. They both seem so sweet.

  23. Jenny Avatar

There is something so sacred in those times when you're up with sick children in the night. My girls are middle-schoolers now so it's different. But when they were small it was as if the world stopped spinning and only the two of us existed – child so dependent on mother and mother dropping away everything to be there. . . and be there.

    Hope she's better soon.

Margot is so funny and she has very advanced verbal skills, it seems to me.
